What's actually in Te Awamutu, Cambridge and Waitomo tap water
Waikato Waters - the council-owned company that has run the Waipa, Waitomo and South Waikato supplies since July 2026 - released its lab workbook for sixteen zones. Ten carry enough to report in full: 1,855 chlorine samples, Te Awamutu to Benneydale. E. coli: zero detections in 1,063 samples. The water is safe. The same release shows what stays in it at the tap: chlorine in every zone, a lead trace in every zone, and chlorination by-products hundreds of times above the EWG health guidelines across Waipa. Your water passes New Zealand's rules. Waikato Waters treats it properly, and its own results show it. The same results show what stays in the water at the tap. Every reportable zone returned a lead trace - the health goal for lead is zero, and Benneydale's reading sits at 30% of the legal limit. The Waipa zones' by-products run hundreds of times above the EWG health guidelines. The numbers are below; what you do about them is up to you.

The Waipa zones are sampled weekly - chlorine, pH, turbidity and the bacteria tests - with metals twice a year and chlorination by-products five or six times. The Waitomo and South Waikato series run at their own cadence, some back to 2022, and every reading released is used. These are the supplier's own results. Typical figures are medians; peaks are the highest single sample.

THM and HAA figures are the highest per-sample totals, summing quantified species and reproducing the lab's own printed totals; HAA sums the three acids the lab reports. Benneydale and Piopio carry no by-product results. Metals: lead was detected in every reportable zone; mercury and cadmium below detection everywhere. Two Benneydale pH readings (0 and 0.98) and one swapped-looking Piopio pair were excluded as physically impossible and are listed in the data file. Total hardness, where measured, ran 25 to 51 g/m3 as CaCO3 - soft. All readings sit inside New Zealand's legal limits. Six zones - Ohaupo, Mokau, Te Kuiti, Tokoroa, Arapuni and Lichfield - are in the release but lack chlorine, metals or bacteria results and are not reported. No PFAS or microplastics tests anywhere in the release.

Benneydale's lead, copper and zinc
Lead does not come from the treatment plant. It is picked up on the way to your tap, from old pipes, solder and brass fittings. Benneydale's 0.003 mg/L is the district's highest - 30% of the legal limit and 15 times the EWG health guideline - and copper and zinc both reached 0.29 mg/L there. Every reportable zone found a lead trace; the health goal is zero.
By-products across Waipa
Chlorine meeting natural organic matter forms trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids, and the Waipa zones show it in every round. Te Awamutu's THM peak of 0.0354 mg/L is 236 times the EWG health guideline; Pukerimu Rural's haloacetic acid total of 0.023 mg/L is 230 times the guideline for that group. Inside New Zealand's limits - both true.
No fluoride found in Waipa - and six zones unreported
The release measured fluoride in every Waipa zone at natural background, 0.05 to 0.15 mg/L, so nothing is being added. Cambridge's 2022 directive to fluoridate had not been acted on when sampled. Tokoroa, Te Kuiti, Ohaupo, Mokau, Arapuni and Lichfield are in the workbook without the tests a report needs. And not one test for PFAS or microplastics anywhere.
