THE NATIONAL RECORD · REGULATOR'S DATA · OFFICIAL INFORMATION ACT

Every water supply on the regulator's record, zone by zone.

Taumata Arowai, the Water Services Authority, is New Zealand's drinking water regulator, and every supplier reports its distribution-zone results to it. We asked for the lot under the Official Information Act. What came back is an extract: 397 supplies and 595 zones, with samples from February 2025 and January to March 2026, plus the Authority's register of 179 exceedances that suppliers notified for events between December 2024 and August 2026. This page is that extract, searchable, with every figure exactly as the regulator holds it.

Not a yearThe Authority described the release as its 2025 reporting period plus 2026 to 9 Aug 2026. The sheets hold one month and one quarter: 61,133 of 61,228 "2025" rows are dated February 2025, and 105,096 of 105,692 "2026" rows are dated January to March 2026. Every chlorine figure below is labelled to those months.
Not chemistry, for most zonesOnly 37 of 595 zones carry any chemical result. Nitrate, PFAS and total haloacetic acids appear nowhere. So there are no health-guideline comparisons on this page; those live on the council reports, built from each council's own release.
Notified exceedances onlyThe register lists exceedances that suppliers themselves notified. The Authority says it does not necessarily capture every sample result, missed sample or unnotified exceedance, and it carries no measured value for any entry. A count, a determinand and two dates: that is all it holds.
Regulator's data · Official Information Act
Released by Water Services Authority - Taumata Arowai under the Official Information Act, reference CAS-02102-L8X2C3, letter dated 3 Sep 2026
166,920 distribution-zone sample rows on two sheets plus a 179-row register of notified exceedances. The Authority's own words: the spreadsheet "should not be interpreted as a complete, final or independently validated national dataset". No treatment-plant results, no supplier names, no sampling sites.

COVERAGE

What the regulator could extract.

The extract is, in practice, a chlorine-and-microbial dataset. The three numbers that frame everything below.

595zones
Across 397 supplies on the sample sheets
Chlorine on 455 of them, E. coli on 590, total coliforms on 586. 235 supplies appear in both months held; 15 only in February 2025, 147 only in January to March 2026.
37of 595
Zones with any chemical result
Lead on 33 zones, trihalomethanes on 3, fluoride on 2, pH on 2, turbidity on 1, nitrate on none. The chemistry councils release to us directly is not in the regulator's zone-level extract.
179
Notified exceedances, December 2024 to August 2026
60 supplies, 64 zones, 5 entries with no zone recorded. Median 7 days from event to notification record, longest 132. Not one carries a measured value.

EVERY ZONE

Find your supply.

Type a town, supply or zone name. Chlorine is the Authority's adjusted value in the unit the supplier submitted (a "less than" result counts as 0). E. coli and total coliforms count results at 1 or more per 100 mL. Click a row with notifications to see each one.

Source: Water Services Authority - Taumata Arowai, Official Information Act response CAS-02102-L8X2C3, letter dated 3 Sep 2026. Statistics use the Authority's "Adjusted Sample Value" (a "less than" result becomes 0, a "greater than" result is held at its ceiling). Units are shown exactly as submitted and never converted; most chlorine rows are mg/L, some ppm or g/m³, and 5 zones (Albury Rural, Allandale, Mangapai, Waipatu, Wanaka Airport) carry chlorine rows the supplier labelled "MPN/100mL". 7 zones (Duvauchelle; Hook/Waituna; Lower Waihao; Otaio/Makikihi; Pigeon Bay; Waimate; Wainui) are continuous online analyser feeds, which is why their sample counts run to the thousands. 7 zones key some E. coli and total coliform results between 0 and 1 where their lab reports "less than 1"; those are never counted as detections. Nothing is de-duplicated: the extract has no sampling-site or time column, so identical rows on one day may be different sites. The chlorine maximum is withheld for 5 zones (Foxton, Levin, Shannon, Tirau, Tokomaru) where the value as held reads as a data-entry error rather than a water result; it stays withheld until the supplier confirms. E. coli detection counts are withheld for 6 Rotorua lake schemes (Hamurana, Kaharoa, Reporoa, Okareka, Rotoma, Rotoiti) whose rows are recorded as exactly 1 MPN/100 mL with no matching notification in the register, while the council's own release (August 2025 to August 2026) shows no E. coli detection on any of its schemes; they stay withheld until the council confirms what those rows are. 13 rows are supplies or zones that appear only in the register, with no sample rows in the extract. Chlorine's NZ maximum acceptable value is 5 mg/L as Cl2; E. coli's is less than 1 in 100 mL of sample.

THE NOTIFIED EXCEEDANCES REGISTER

179 notifications, 60 supplies, by determinand.

This is the Authority's own register of exceedances that suppliers notified, events dated December 2024 to August 2026. Each entry is a supply, a zone, a determinand and two dates. There is no measured value, no unit, no supplier name and no context text against any of them, so the size of an exceedance cannot be read from this source. The busiest supplies: Norsewood 30, North Bruce Rural 16, Richardson Rural 14, Moa Flat 12, Puriri 8, Stirling 7, Ohai/Nightcaps 6, Auckland 6, Bushy Creek 5, Kerepehi/Waitakaruru 5.

Source: the "Notified Exceedances" tab of Official Information Act response CAS-02102-L8X2C3, Water Services Authority - Taumata Arowai, letter dated 3 Sep 2026. Determinand names are grouped only by spelling ("e. coli (MPN)" and "e. coli (CFU)" as E. coli); nothing is reclassified. Dates are the register's event dates. Where our verified table of New Zealand limits holds no entry for a determinand, no limit is quoted. 13 supplies in the register (Bushy Creek, Cissy Bay, Clydevale Village Waterworks, Hakataramea Valley Rural, Hautope Water Scheme, Highbank Water Society Supply, McLaren Falls Park, Ohau Alpine Village, Para Para, Pelorus Bridge, Puriri, RNZAF Base Woodbourne, Taharoa Village) have no sample rows anywhere in the extract.

Detections on the sample sheets with no matching notification

The register and the sample sheets do not always agree. These E. coli results of 1 or more per 100 mL sit on the sample sheets with no E. coli notification for the same zone within three days either side. Either the notification was not made, or it is not in the extract; the Authority's own caveat allows for both.

WHAT IS NOT HERE

What the extract never measures.

Saying what a dataset does not contain matters as much as what it does. These determinands have no measured result on either sample sheet, for any of the 595 zones.

No rows on either sheetNitrate, Nitrite, Haloacetic acids (total), PFAS, PFOA, PFOS, Manganese, Aluminium, Iron, Hardness, Boron, Uranium, Bromate, Chlorite. The Authority says the extract is not a complete record of all monitoring undertaken by suppliers, so the honest reading is "not in the regulator's zone-level extract", not "never tested".
Manganese and aluminium: notified, never measured40 manganese and 56 aluminium notifications sit in the register, and not one measured value for either appears anywhere on the sample sheets.
The register has no values179 notifications, each a supply, a zone, a determinand and two dates. The measured value, unit and context the covering letter mentions are not in the file, and neither is a supplier column.
Almost no physical or chemical panelpH on 2 zones, turbidity on 1, any metal on 33 at most, trihalomethanes on 3, fluoride on 2. No treatment-plant results at all, by the Authority's interpretation of the request.
